Local Case Study – Mike Halloran

Mike ambulating with his new knee and foot

Patient: Mike Halloran
Age:
Product: Ossur Rheo Microprocessor knee and Proflex torsion foot
Medical History: In August of 2013, Mike was involved in a motorcycle accident in Ohio, after which he sustained an above-knee amputation. After the accident, Mike was initially fitted with a traditional carbon fiber laminated design. He found the socket to be very uncomfortable and it irritated his skin. Mike’s life changed forever when he attended a lecture on osseointegration by the renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Munjed Al Muderis, who founded the Osseointegration Group of Australia.  From this inspiring event, Mike and his wife traveled to Sydney, Australia, where Dr. Al Muderis and his team performed the trans-femoral, osseointegration procedure. Following the surgery, Mike began physical therapy with Karen Little, MSPT, physical therapist and clinical coordinator of rehabilitation services at Bon Secours Community Hospital’s Physical Rehabilitation Department.   Recently, Mike’s prosthetic componentry began to fail and were out of warranty, he required a new coupler, alignable components, knee and foot with torsion adaption.

Mike was seen in our office on March 8th, 2019.  He was currently utilizing loaner components from his previous prosthetist, which consisted of a mechanical knee and a non-torsion foot.  Mike admitted that he didn’t feel as safe or confident with the non-microprocessor knee and without a torsion adapter and that he had fallen several times. He was in need of a new abutment coupler (to attach the prosthesis to his anatomy), prosthetic knee, alignable components and a foot with torsion adaption capability

Prosthetic Goals: Mike’s goals were as follows: being able to negotiate uneven terrain, ascend/descend stairs, descending slopes unassisted, being able to run and to increase his confidence ambulating in the community.

Prosthetic Recommendation: At Mike’s request, he was trial fit with some of the leading prosthetic knees and feet in the industry and ultimately chose an Ossur Rheo microprocessor knee, Otto Bock positional locking rotator and an Ossur Proflex Torsion LP foot.

One week follow up: Everything’s going great.  I haven’t fallen once, since I got the new knee.”  He felt that his confidence was improving with the new components and after some initial training in the office, he continues to improve his ability to ascend/descend stairs.
