Estelio Cabarcas, Patient Advocate

My name is Estelio Cabarcas. I am married, have three children and two grandchildren. I also love gardening, spending time around my house, reading, painting, spending time on my computer and walking.
I worked in the supermarket industry for almost 30 yrs. I started as a clerk and worked myself up to a manager. I left the supermarket and worked as a Key Accounts Manager for several Hispanic food companies from 1995 until 2007. In 2007, I was diagnosed with vascular disease. Complications arose from the disease and I developed a drop foot. I developed a serious infection on the bottom of my right foot due to the lack of blood flow. This led to weeks in the hospital and ultimately led to an amputation of my right leg below the knee in 2009. After weeks and months of depression and sadness I snapped out of it. I was determined to accept my disability and move on with the rest of my life for my family and myself.

Since than I have experienced many complications with sores, fittings of the prosthetics and scores of sockets, not to mention the pains and the visits to the pain management doctor plus the wound doctor. I cannot thank my Family enough for the support and encouragement they have given me to battle my disability and be the person I am today being active and productive

It has been a challenging and life changing period for me but I have learned that the loss of a limb did not stop me from pursuing the quality of LIFE that I seek.

I would like for other amputees like myself to know that there is LIFE after an amputation. I am not saying it will be easy but it is definitely POSSIBLE with the support of family, friends, peers and most important of all is that you have trust in your prosthetist but it always has to start with YOU. Positive Attitude and positive thoughts of life tasks is a tremendous help and remedy.
