I’m about to have amputation surgery or I just had amputation surgery. What is the next step?

How much do prostheses/orthoses cost?
All insurance companies have different contracted rates. The best way to find out what the cost is, would be to have a free consultation done to determine the most appropriate device. From this consultation, we would be able to find out what the total cost of the device is and if you have any deductibles or co-insurance responsibilities.
Do you accept my insurance?

How long does it take to receive my prosthesis/orthosis?
Prosthetics – It usually takes between 4 to 6 weeks from the date of the casting to receive your prosthesis.
Orthotics – from receiving authorization, it usually takes around 2 weeks to receive the orthosis. For larger orthoses, like a KAFO, it takes around 4 weeks to receive the device, after receiving authorization.
Are there and amputee support groups available?
There are local support groups available. If you are out of the area, relative to our office, we could find a support group closer to your home or you could go to the Amputee Coalition website to find this information. www.amputee-coalition.org.
How often do I need to be seen by my prosthetist/orthotist?
Prosthetics – Usually, Jon likes to see a patient, one week after he delivers the prosthesis. After this initial follow-up visit, we like to see a patient around a month later and then every six months after that. It’s important to understand that you should not wait for these scheduled appointments, if you are experiencing any pain or discomfort in the socket and if so, you should make an appointment immediately, so that the issue take be addressed early in the process.
Orthotics – there usually isn’t a follow-up needed, unless there are any pressure issues or discomfort from the orthosis. Other than that, follow-ups aren’t usually necessary.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes. Jon will need to see you before he can properly determine what the appropriate device would be.
Do I need a referral?
No, you could come in for a free consultation with Jon. Together, you will determine the best treatment plan. You would then have to make an appointment with your physician to obtain a detailed prescription and the doctor’s chart notes, indicating that they are treating you for the particular device needed.
How long will the appointment take?
Most appointments take about an hour. This is to ensure that you will receive the most appropriate device to help you reach your goals.
What do I need to bring to my first appointment?
You should bring all of your insurance card(s), an official photo ID, and any prescriptions related to your appointment for the orthosis and/or prosthesis. While you’re in the office, we’ll have you fill out a new patient, “in-take” form.
Are there any co-pays due in any of my visits?
No, there are no co-pays associated with any of your appointments.
Will my insurance pay for the device?
We will do our best to contact your insurance companies and provide them with all of the required information necessary to achieve authorization. Many insurances will require pre-authorization for a prosthesis and/or orthosis. The process of achieving authorization can take up to 4 weeks. In the event that we are unable to achieve authorization from your insurance, you may be asked to assist in this process by contacting your insurance company directly and/or retrieving the necessary documentation requested by your insurance, from your doctor.
